Over the last three months we have had some wonderful events going on. To mention a few; the celebration of the Buddha’s birthday and enlightenment brought over eighty people, young and old together to share in ceremony and a meal. It was a collaboration between the SLO Zen sangha and ours and was so meaningful.
We've had the privilege of having several different invited teachers come to share the dharma with us, including a 5 day retreat with teacher Vance Pryor that concluded last week. We’ve had a boost in members, bringing our membership now to 312 people. And we have a weekend retreat happening with teacher Mei Elliot at the end of July.
I do feel that we are truly living our mission in so many ways which in part says, “to provide a Buddhist community where all individuals can be empowered to awaken to their true nature”.
One of the wonderful ways that members can deepen their practice is by going on residential retreat. White Heron Sangha has a Retreat Scholarship fund for a member who may want to do this but lack the financial resources. The application is located on the website under “Community” at the bottom of the dropdown. We encourage and wholeheartedly support you in applying if the cost of retreat has held you back. Taking time to disconnect from the typical rhythm of life can be so healing.
On the 28th of June, we’ll be gathering at the center for a half day retreat. This is an opportunity for all those who currently volunteer and those who are considering it to come together. You’ll get a wide view of all the activities and programs being offered, the effort and hours devoted to making it happen and a chance to brainstorm with others on ideas to sustain it. You should have received an invitation at the end of May. Please come if you can, we’d love to have your input. Our all-volunteer Sangha needs nurturing.
And lastly, this is my last year as the board president. We are in the process of filling that role with the next volunteer and my intention is to stay on the board and to mentor that person and help in any way that I can. Please contact me via email with any thoughts or suggestions.
I hope all of you have a lovely summer and if you are traveling, may it be a safe and happy journey.
In the dharma,
Susan
