Jan Sprague - Finding my Self, and losing it in Kathmandu.
About this event
Jan Sprague - Finding my Self, and losing it in Kathmandu.
What working in one of the poorest regions of our world has taught me about taking my Buddhist practice into the world.
The Self can be a big Buddhist topic, but what does it mean to let go of your self, and who you think you are? Working with my son in the Himalayas, among low caste people and untouchables, I had to leave my old self behind. My Dharma practice became my compass on how to navigate a new path for letting go of “self”. That path has taken me into extremes of poverty, and challenges of finding how to be the best service to help others. The Dalai Lama says to find happiness, help others. Running our NGO in Nepal has opened up areas of happiness I never before felt I could realize.
Jan Sprague has a photojournalism degree and teaching credential from Cal Poly. She has worked as Director of HANDS in Nepal for 20 years. along side her son Danny Chaffin. Their NGO has built schools, libraries and community centers in some of the most remote and poorest areas of the Himalayas. Her personal mission is to help educate single-parent, marginalized women living in poverty in the Kathmandu area. Currently she is trying to raise awareness of homeless girls and women who have been trafficked through her support of Kopila, a home that seeks to give medical care, support and education to rescued girls and women.
