"The Eloquent Exit" - Devin Wallace
About this event
Update: In-person attendance is now open to all individuals who are free from cold/flu/COVID symptoms, regardless of COVID vaccination status. Attendance on zoom will continue to be an option for the Sunday Program.
In Japan, there is a long tradition of "jisei", or death poems. Typically quite short, they are one's parting words to the world, a reflection of the writer's mind right at the end of life. When composed by Buddhists, particularly Zen monks, they often conveyed a sense of "Ah, now I see!", the words suggesting a leap beyond dualistic thinking and fixed beliefs.
In tonight's session, we'll sample a number of these evocative Buddhism-inspired verses, along with some scholars' commentary. And we'll end by discussing the possibility of writing our own jisei, should conditions permit! (Much more fun than writing your own obituary, no?).
Please bring a pen and paper for a writing exercise.
