A Balanced Heart: Compassion and Equanimity

A Hybrid Weekend Retreat with Susie Harrington

Hearts
We live in challenging times. Meeting the world and the myriad conditions is a life skill and a spiritual practice.  Through Insight meditation practice, we are given the opportunity to see the many patterns and habits of mind that keep us isolated and separate from our experiences and the world.  As we dismantle these patterns, our hearts soften, our capacity to see clearly increases, and we are touched and can touch the world more directly.  With the protective strategies softened, the story of me becomes more transparent, and our hearts contact the 10,000 joys and the 10,000 sorrows. To be touched is a blessing, to be alive and connected is a tender and transformative experience. With intimacy and connection, we feel the suffering of the world, with an open heart, compassion arises in response to that suffering. Compassion is the whole-hearted and balanced connection and understanding of the difficulties of life - our own and those of others. Equanimity, in combination with compassion, allows for heartfelt connection while maintaining balance, as we experience the joys and sorrows of our own lives and those of the world we care about.

On this weekend retreat we will explore seeing through the isolating identify of self and allowing the goodness of our hearts to meet the world.  This silent meditation retreat will have sitting and walking practice, as well a small group meetings with the teacher and dharma talks.

Susie Harrington

Susie Harrington has trained in the Insight tradition since 1989, and in 2005 was invited to teach. While her root tradition is with Thai Forest and Burmese lineages of Theravadan Buddhism, she has also practiced extensively with Tibetan Dzogchen and Mahamudra teachers. She teaches internationally, is the guiding teacher for Desert Dharma, and serves communities in the Southwest near her home in Moab, Utah. Her teaching is deeply grounded in the body and she brings the skills of inquiry, relational dharma, and the psychological/spiritual interface from her training in HakomiTherapy and the Diamond Approach. Believing nature to be a profound teacher, and a gateway to our true self, she often offers retreats outside. For more information: www.desertdharma.org.
