White Heron Sangha welcomes you to a two-day non-residential retreat at our White Heron Meditation Center in Avila Village with Guy Armstrong, an insight meditation teacher and author.
Understanding emptiness unlocks the doors to the deepest, most liberating insights that meditation has to offer.
Emptiness has been a key theme in Buddhist practice and theory since the earliest teachings of the Buddha himself. Understanding emptiness unlocks the doors to the deepest, most liberating insights that meditation has to offer. However, due to its subtlety and profound implications, emptiness has not been well-understood in the West so far.
In this weekend retreat we will explore both the conceptual foundations and experiential approaches to the realization of emptiness in four main areas: self, phenomena, awareness, and compassion. Through talks, discussions, and guided meditations, participants will learn how to deconstruct a sense of fixed identity and reduce clinging to phenomena that are inherently transient. The spacious awareness that we discover in this process turns out to be the source of a boundless compassion that encompasses ourselves and all sentient beings.
This weekend will be largely based on Guy’s book Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators. It will be helpful, but not necessary, for participants to have read the book before coming to the retreat.
The weekend will be evenly divided between talks, discussions, and meditations. The retreat is appropriate for all levels of practice. Silence will be observed, unless directed otherwise by the teacher.
Guy Armstrong has practiced insight meditation for over 40 years, including training as a Buddhist monk in Thailand with Ajahn Buddhadasa. Guy began teaching in 1984 and has led retreats worldwide. He has taught long retreats at both the Insight Meditation Society and Spirit Rock for the last twenty years. Guy is a member of the Spirit Rock Teachers Council, a Guiding Teacher of the Insight Meditation Society, and author of Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators.
