Koans (from Chinese gongan, literally “public cases”) are seemingly non-sensical riddles or anecdotes designed as pathways to awakening.

“…a koan points to something of deep importance and invites us to stand in that place.”  -James Ishmael Ford, Roshi

We will explore some of the history and use of this ancient tool from the world of Zen. How can koan introspection serve us today?  Right here?  Right now?  What’s the mystery?  So tell me, what IS your original face from before your parents were born?
