On August 10, the new Socially
Engaged Buddhist Study Group (SEBS Group) met for the first time. Twelve people attended this first meeting and several more have indicated an interest in attending the next
one. We all share the desire to
ground our social and environmental justice work and concerns more firmly in
our Buddhist study and practice. We
believe that by taking refuge in the Dharma and the Sangha that we will be more
effective in our various individual attempts to reduce societal and
environmental suffering while avoiding hopelessness and burn-out (more info).
We have decided to begin with a study of the “Fourteen Precepts/Guidelines for Engaged Buddhism” put forth by Thich Nhat Hanh. Specifically, our meeting on August 24 will focus on the first three of these Precepts/Guidelines.
If you are interested in attending the SEBS Group, you are welcome. We meet regularly on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM at the White Heron Sangha Meditation Center in Avila Village.
