Last fall, I taught a new class entitled “A Brief Overview of the Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path and Their Application To Daily Life.” At the time, I wasn’t sure if this would be a regular offering. However, in this time of quarantine and uncertainty, it seemed a good idea to provide another session this year.
The class will start September 3 and will meet from 6pm-7pm for six consecutive Thursdays, with the last class on October 8. (September 3, 10, 17, 24, & October 1, 8)
Though this series covers much of the same material as the Core Buddhism class that I usually teach in January, there are several important differences. Core Buddhism is usually restricted to nine or ten attendees and requires a commitment to attend all five of the sessions. It is also two hours and 15 minutes long with a break in the middle. This brief overview class is six meetings of one hour each with no break. Another important difference is that for this series attendance at all classes, while encouraged, is not required. Also, there is essentially no limit to how many people may attend.
The class will, in all likelihood, be held online via Zoom. I request that if you do join us you have pen/pencil and paper handy, since we will be doing some very brief writing exercises in each class.
You may feel that you know all about the Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path, but I’ve been teaching on these subjects since 1997, and each time around I discover some new, deeper aspect. Many years ago I heard a well known teacher tell this story: She said that a year or two after she started on the Path of the Buddha, well before she became a teacher, she remembered thinking, “When do we get to the ‘secret teachings?’” Her point was that these basic teachings initially could seem deceptively simple, while in reality, they are very deep. You literally can spend an entire lifetime working with The Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path.
My intent is to continue to teach the Core Buddhism class probably in January/February. Even if the class in 2021 has to be taught via Zoom, I will still limit enrollment to ten, and require a commitment. This Core Buddhism Class is more in depth than the Brief Overview series (ten hours versus six). If you want notification of when the next Core Buddhism class will be taught, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will get you on the list. If you are already on my list, you do not need to contact me unless you ask to be removed or your email address has changed. I send out the notification approximately one month before the Core Buddhism class is scheduled to begin.
If you have questions about either of these classes, please e-mail me or phone me at 805-772-4580.
